Duran Duran
The ShardsDuran Duran is a pop band whose music and image enter the novel through the carefully curated soundtrack of Buckley’s wealthy teenage social scene. The band’s video for “Girls on Film” plays during a night at the space, where Bret watches Robert whisper to Thom; elsewhere, Duran Duran appears as one of the glamorous entertainments associated with Debbie’s selective invitations. The band functions less as background decoration than as part of the visual and musical environment through which the teenagers stage status, intimacy, and unease.
Music and Social Status
Debbie’s parties and invitations are organized around exclusivity and celebrity. Bret recalls that she chose whom to invite to events involving Billy Idol at Madame Wong’s, Duran Duran poolside at the Hilton, or Fleetwood Mac backstage at the Hollywood Bowl. The list places the band within a world where access to music and performers is also a display of social access: Debbie’s power lies partly in deciding who gets included.
The Video at the Space
During the night at the space, Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” video is playing in one of the rooms. Bret watches from the back as Robert lies beside Thom and leans over to whisper to him. Thom grips a Corona bottle and nods along, appearing high and innocent to Bret, who imagines Robert drawing him toward the same dark wavelength Robert inhabits. The music video supplies the immediate setting for a charged moment of observation, but the scene’s significance rests in the uncertain exchange between the two young men and Bret’s interpretation of it.
A Shared Soundtrack and Its Limits
The band’s presence links the ordinary pleasures of the characters’ social world to its more troubling undercurrents. Duran Duran can signify a coveted invitation and a familiar pop spectacle, while the video at the space becomes the backdrop to Bret’s suspicion about Robert’s influence over Thom. The novel does not present the song itself as evidence of what Robert tells Thom; instead, the music helps frame a scene in which watching, imagining, and interpreting are inseparable.
